Description: Director Patrice Chereau is known for intimate films involving often at most two characters – INTIMACY, SON FRERE. In his latest film GABRIELLE, the pair concerned is a husband, Jean Hervey (Pascal Greggory) and wife, Gabrielle (Isabelle Huppert) whose life is comprised of their organized socials of their so-called friends or acquaintances. Jean has all the comforts of a rich socialite but he is most proud of his trophy wife, Gabrielle, who he shows off to everyone. He loves her pallid complexion for the sole reason of watching her different temperaments revealed through the blood in her veins. It does not bother him that sex hardly comes into the picture. That is until she sets him a note that she is leaving him. But before he can complete reading the note, she decides to return to him. But the act is committed and things can never be the same. His security and confidence have been shaken and to prove his invulnerability, he starts abusing Gabrielle. At this point, Chereau’s film holds its footing and his film examines a character study of each of its two principals.
Based on Joseph Conrad’s THE RETURN and adapted into a turn of the century visual French drama by writers Chereau and Anne Louise Trividic, GABRIELLE succeeds primarily for the performances of Huppert and Greggory. Huppert has always chosen her challenging roles carefully (MA MERE, LA PIANISTE) and watching her in any film is often worth the price of the admission ticket. Here, Chereau alternates her act with that of Greggory (last seen in the un-released ARSENE LUPIN). In fact, it is Greggory that has the most to offer. He turns from arrogant to vulnerable to nasty to hopelessness. Huppert winningly matches his vigour often with silence and reaction. Her look when her husband tosses water at her face is enough to evoke the strongest of spouse abuse.
GABRIELLE is not easy watching as the topic deals with deep inner bottled-up emotions. Still Chereau’s film is a craftfully executed piece of theatrical film making that succeeds on multiple levels.
