Synopsis: The Day the Earth Stood Still is a 2008 American science fiction film, a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. In 1928, a mountaineer (Keanu Reeves) encounters a glowing sphere while on an expedition in the snowy mountains of India. He then finds himself awakening after a sudden loss of consciousness, with the sphere now gone and a scar on his hand. In the present day, Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly), a Princeton professor, and other scientists are hastily assembled by the government in order to formulate a survival plan when it is feared that a large unknown object with a speed of 3x107m/s is due to impact Manhattan in over an hour. Nothing can be done about it because a vital military satellite has been disabled. The object is a large spherical biological spaceship, which slows down and lands gently in Central Park. A being (taking on the appearance of the man from the opening scene of the film) named Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) emerges from the sphere while accompanied by a large robot. Klaatu, a representative of a group of alien races, has come to assess whether humanity can reverse the environmental damage it has inflicted on planet Earth...

In the ensuing confusion, Klaatu is shot, but survives. The large robot activates and proceeds to disrupt all electrical systems in the city of New York, including many of the defense systems that the military has mustered in a perimeter around the spaceship. Before it can do any further damage, Klaatu orders it to shut down. While recovering from the wound, Klaatu is detained by Regina Jackson (Kathy Bates), the United States Secretary of Defense, and is barred from speaking to the United Nations. Klaatu manages to escape, and he soon finds himself eluding the authorities throughout Northern New Jersey, specifically Newark and the forested Highlands with Helen and her stepson Jacob (Jaden Smith).
Meanwhile, the presence of the sphere has caused a worldwide panic, and the military manages to capture the robot after it thwarts their attempts to destroy the sphere using unmanned aerial vehicles and Sidewinder missiles. Klaatu decides that humans shall be exterminated to ensure that the planet – with its rare ability to sustain complex life – can survive. He orders smaller spheres previously hidden on Earth to begin taking animal species off the planet, and Jackson, reminded of Noah's Ark, fears that a cataclysm is imminent. During and following the Balkan Wars of the 1990's, various types of war criminals and low level mobsters escaped to countries in Western Europe fleeing either the authorities or their enemies. Many more innocent people came to America dreaming of a better life and a fresh start away from all the horrors they had witnessed.
Out of this turmoil, comes the story of Darko Lucev and his sister Lana. Darko, a criminal on the run, finds illegal transport to America and offers to take his sister Lana with him, who is alone in the world and clinging to the only family she has left, not knowing what lies ahead for her thousands of miles away from home.
The Census Bureau recently reported that the foreign born population of the United States as of March 2003 is estimated at 33,000,000, up from 9,600,000 in 1970. The latest numbers indicate that one in every ten U.S. residents are now immigrants. Countless others enter America illegally for any number of reasons hoping to either escape from their past or grab a piece of the American Dream.

After they roam the streets of Chicago for awhile, the brother and sister find a room in a dingy transient hotel, quickly learning about the underside of American life.

Darko knows only one way of life and is willing to drag even his own sister down with him as he tries to stay two steps ahead of his pursuers. After her dreams of a peaceful new life in America are shattered by the grim realities of her new existence with Darko, Lana begins plotting a way out. Before that is able to happen, both their lives begin to careen out of control as the web of danger closes in on them. As Darko's true character is exposed, Lana is forced to decide her own destiny, realizing she will still remain an illegal outsider, a stranger in a strange land.
“Lana’s Rain” is a fever dream of a movie, which tackles with headlong energy a combustible mixture of social realism and gritty film noir. The sprawling independent production filmed in 78 locations, including the opening scenes shot in Croatia and ones in Gary, Indiana and Baltimore, Maryland, where Darko and Lana enter America on a freighter. The majority of the film is set in Chicago and shot on numerous locations on the streets of Chicago, in a period when many movies are set in Chicago but actually filmed elsewhere.

The son of a family of devout Jehovah’s Witnesses is accused of killing his teacher after being caught fleeing the scene of her murder.
The compelling new drama from the producers of 24, stars Tim Roth ("The Incredible Hulk," "Reservoir Dogs") as DR. CAL LIGHTMAN, the world's leading deception expert who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if someone is lying, but why. When a commanding officer of an important military unit is accused of a sexual assault on his commanding offer Dr. Lightman and Ria are called in to investigate and find out if the accusation is true before he is shipped back to Afghanistan. Will Lightman be able to find the truth before he is back out of the country and putting more lives in danger? Meanwhile Gillian and Eli look into whether a college basketball star took a bribe from a wealthy benefactor of the university in which he plays.

Summary Plot: Jane Campion directs the erotic thriller In the Cut, based on the best-selling suspense novel by Susanna Moore. Set in New York City during the summertime, the film is centered on Frannie Avery (Meg Ryan), a middle-class English teacher in the midst of researching a book project about colloquial language. One night she accidentally witnesses a sexual situation involving a suspected killer, which may make her valuable to a police investigation. When Detective Malloy (Mark Ruffalo) comes to her apartment to interview her about a neighborhood murder, she becomes intensely attracted to him. Although they are not sure if they can completely trust each other, Frannie and Malloy start up a passionate love affair. Meanwhile, the killer remains on the loose and the list of suspects includes Malloy's partner, Rodriguez (Nick Damici), and Frannie's student Cornelius (Sharrieff Pugh). Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Frannie's half-sister, Pauline. In the Cut was shown at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival.

Few directors have attempted to revive the '70s psycho-sexual thriller with the vigor that Jane Campion does in In the Cut, her uneven but adventurous first stab at genre filmmaking. Say what you will about the film -- overheated, grisly, riddled with plot holes -- it's never tentative. Heroine Meg Ryan isn't portrayed as a schoolmarm-in-the-woods type exploring the dangerous and threatening world of big-city sexuality so much as she's a grown woman trying to narrow the sometimes-imperceptible gap between desire and self-respect. Her scenes with Mark Ruffalo play up the threat that lurks just beneath the surface of his character's slouchy machismo, and they're riveting: The two have a strange kind of anti-chemistry that prevents In the Cut from devolving into another cautionary tale about the perils of female lust. The adaptation's stock thriller template -- replete with a ersatz-Silence of the Lambs ending -- just about does in the production in its last act. But even as she provides a tidy resolution, Campion refuses to suggest that all is well in the world of male-female courtship.
